6 Reasons to Visit Benagil Cave

Located on the coast of a small fishing town in the Algarve, Benagil Cave is one of the top natural attractions in all of Portugal. Carved by the rough waters of the Algarve’s southern coastline, this famous natural cavern has a hole in the top where sunlight streams into the sandy cave below.

With entrances from the ocean, visitors can explore Benagil Cave by kayak, paddle board, or boat. It’s easy to see why Benagil Cave is worth exploring, but if you still need convincing, here are 6 reasons to visit this bucket-list location.

It’s Easy to Get There

After reading about the incredible natural beauty that makes Benagil Cave a must-visit location, you’re probably wondering just how far off the beaten path this cave is. It should come as no surprise that Benagil Cave is located in a fishing town called – you guessed it – Benagil!

You can drive to the cave in just 15 minutes from Lagoa. You’ll find the cave at the beach, Praia de Benagil, where parking is free at the lot at the top of the cliffs. From there, walk down the steep hill to reach the beach. You can also park closer to the beach, but parking can be tricky since the road is so steep – in fact, locals recommend using tire blocks in addition to your car’s hand brake!

You can look into the cave from above by climbing the cliffs, but you won’t get the best view since there’s a fence around the eye of the cave for safety. Head down to the beach for the full experience!

Enter the Cave by Kayak or SUP

One of the coolest reasons to add Benagil Cave to your Portugal itinerary is the fact that you can paddle right into it! Kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is the best way to experience the cave. Just rent a kayak or SUP right on the beach and enjoy a 10-15-minute paddle around the rock formations to get into the caves.

Kayaking is the perfect option for accessing the cave since swimming isn’t recommended – the water is prone to choppy waves and currents.

Once inside, you can hop off your board and check out the rough, layered walls and bright domed interior. Don’t forget to bring your camera for the incredible photo opportunities!

If you’re new to kayaking or SUP, consider booking a Benagil Cave tour to experience the excitement with a local tour guide! They’ll show you the best way into the cave and teach you about the rock formations and local culture.

Benagil Village is Worth Exploring

The cave isn’t the only attraction in this area! The small fishing village of Benagil has become a popular tourist spot thanks to the beauty of the cave. The village itself is charming and beautiful, with narrow streets, quaint buildings, and delicious seafood restaurants and cafes. Accommodations in the village are available on Airbnb and are super affordable.

Visit Multiple Caves on One Boat Tour

If paddling into the cave isn’t your thing, or you’re traveling with small children, a Benagil Cave boat tour is the perfect option! And the best reason to book a boat tour is that they often visit multiple caves in one trip.

From the famous Benagil Cave to other caves near Portimão Marina, a cave boat tour is a great way to experience the beauty of the Algarve. See 20 caves along the coast and stop at a beach where you can go snorkeling or cool off in the turquoise water.

Lounge on the Beach

Take some time after exploring Benagil Cave to hang out at Praia de Benagil, the beach right next to the cave. This is the perfect spot to soak up the sun, get yourself a great tan to go with your vacation photos, and relax or take a dip.

There’s also a small cafe on the beach where you can buy refreshments. Don’t forget your sunscreen and a good book!

Chase the Adrenaline Rush

If relaxing on the beach sounds a little too quiet for your taste, climb the cliffs and look down at the cave from above – you won’t believe the view! Another great activity for adventure seekers is cliff jumping! There are many cliffs next to the beach that you can hike up and jump into the water below. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the water and find the best places to jump. Watch the locals for a while before attempting this yourself!

You just can’t miss a trip to Benagil Cave! And with so many amazing towns nearby, it’s a no-brainer. Check out Lagos and Carvoeiro to the west, home to more beautiful beaches, restaurants, and attractions.
